Common words in press releases

Following on from a post on Reputation Online about overused keywords in press releases, I thought I'd post some more detail on the research that post was based on.

Inspired by this post by Adam Sherk, we did an analysis of all words used in press releases on our press release wire the last sixty days to 18 August 2010 (that was the biggest dataset we could use without breaking the software we used). We just looked at individual words, not phrases. That’s 29,517 unique words from 1,269 individual press releases (during one of the quietest parts of the year).

I'm not quite sure what the results really tell us but what you might consider are current 'buzz words' don't seem to appear as often as you might expect.

Impact of public sector spending cuts on PR - survey

It's relatively early days but the emergency budget will no doubt take its toll on public sector communications budgets and we're doing some research to see what sort of impact, if any, there has been on the PR agency world.

If you're from a PR agency please take part in the survey - it takes just a minute to complete (just five questions) and no personal or contact information is taken. Please take part even if the public sector is not an important part of your business.

We ask that the survey is completed only once per agency.

The survey will close on Friday 27 August 2010 and results will be shared here in early September.

A fresh look at blogging and PR - latest whitepaper

Our latest whitepaper takes a close look at blogging and how it relates to public relations (PR) professionals.

Written by Peter Brady, CEO of social media agency Orbital Media, An Introduction to Blogging for PR Professionals argues why the PR community should pay more attention to blogging.

Brady says: "In addition to helping you build contacts within your industry or your client’s, many prominent blogs now break news stories and in some cases have become more trusted than traditional media."

The eight-page whitepaper goes on to give advice about creating your own blog and also tactical tips on engaging with bloggers.

I for one wish there was such a useful document out there when I started blogging five years ago.

Why you can no longer ignore Twitter

If you're already using Twitter then this one's probably not for you. But if you're a sceptic, definitely read on.

Many UK public relations people and journalists are on Twitter and it seems more are joining all the time (we've collected nearly 4,000 Twitter IDs for journalists and media outlets and are getting more all the time). Now, if you're thinking "oh Twitter is just another social media fad and there are more important things to do" then I would say think again. Twitter is elegant in its simplicity and its emphasis on real-time communication makes it a great tool for media people. If you are active in only one social network then it ought to be Twitter.

Here are a few tips, specifically to PR professionals who are new to Twitter:

1. Make sure your profile includes a picture and a biog that explains who you are and what you do - you are more likely to be followed if your profile has personality

2. Follow relevant media in your sector (our FeaturesExec Media Database includes Twitter IDs for journalists and media outlets). Follow your peers also

3. Tweet useful stuff, share insights, link to your blog or content on your company website or third party sites

4. Re-tweet stuff you find useful and get into conversation by replying to tweets where you have valuable comments

5. Use your judgement as to whether it is appropriate to reply to journalists or direct message them if you can (remember - Twitter is a public platform)

6. Dip into Twitter regularly - give yourself a target of a Tweet a day

This is just an introduction to get you started, I stopped at six tips but could have gone on to 60 or more. The thing is to just get stuck in - social media is very important to PR on a number of levels and I have always believed the best way to get your head around it is to get involved.
